PPF & car wrap FAQs

Does PPF stop every stone chip?

No. PPF cannot stop every stone chip, but correctly selected and installed film can substantially reduce common impact damage on covered areas. At Smeaton Grange, the recommendation should account for your Sydney routes, vehicle height, speed, existing paint and the zones you most want to preserve.

Arrange an inspection
01

What film can and cannot do

Film is a sacrificial layer designed to absorb or spread some impacts before they reach paint. A small stone at ordinary road speed may leave less visible damage than it would on bare paint. A large, sharp or high-energy impact can dent, mark or cut through the film, and an uncovered panel receives no benefit. Film also does not correct a dent or make poor paint sound. Its value is reducing likely wear, not guaranteeing an untouched car.

  • Impact severity, angle and film coverage all matter.
  • A dent may remain even when paint is protected.
  • Film damage can be preferable to paint damage but still needs assessment.
02

Sydney exposure changes the priority

Motorways, busy arterial roads, roadworks, truck traffic and wet road spray can put grit into the front of a vehicle. Stone and tyre debris may also reach guards, sills and rear-quarter areas, especially on performance cars. UV and heat add environmental stress, while insects and road film can bond to a warm front end. A route-based inspection is more useful than an assumption that every owner needs the same package.

  • Prioritise the front end for forward-facing impacts.
  • Consider sills and rear quarters where tyre debris is evident.
  • Review coverage if driving changes from local trips to motorway kilometres.
03

Installation and maintenance affect results

A clean, prepared substrate and carefully finished edge help film stay presentable. Contamination, stretched areas or poorly considered joins can be more noticeable than expected. After installation, gentle washing and sensible pressure-washer distance reduce lifting risk. Do not pick at a damaged edge; photograph it and ask for an assessment. Regular inspection also catches chips and contamination before they become harder to manage.

  • Do not use automatic brushes on protected panels.
  • Remove bugs and grime promptly, without aggressive scrubbing.
  • Keep the installer’s aftercare guidance with the vehicle records.
04

Making a realistic protection decision

Ask which risks the proposed coverage addresses and what remains outside it. A partial front package may suit a city car, while a wider plan may be reasonable for a low sports car that follows other vehicles closely. Fleet operators should balance high-wear zones against vehicle downtime and replacement-panel presentation. A clear inspection, written scope and honest discussion of limits are stronger indicators of value than an absolute stone-chip claim.

FAQ

Related questions

Does PPF stop every stone chip?

No. PPF can substantially reduce common impact damage on covered panels, but severe impacts, dents, cuts and uncovered areas remain possible.

Can a stone chip through PPF be repaired?

The film and the underlying panel should be inspected. A small film mark may be manageable, while a cut, dent or exposed paint may require film replacement or separate repair planning.

Does full-body PPF prevent all damage?

No. It increases covered area but cannot prevent every impact, dent, road hazard or damage to trims and uncovered components.
