PPF & car wrap FAQs

Can PPF go over paint-corrected panels?

Yes, PPF can be installed over suitable paint-corrected panels, and correction may improve the finish visible beneath clear film. Correction must be measured and safe: it does not make unstable paint, deep scratches or poor repairs suitable for film. Prestige Auto Australia recommends inspection before deciding whether correction, PPF or both are appropriate.

01

Why correction may be worthwhile

Clear PPF shows much of what lies beneath it. Swirls, haze, bonded contamination and light defects that can be safely reduced may otherwise remain visible after installation. Correcting first can therefore produce a cleaner reflected image and avoid trapping a disappointing finish under a new layer. It is not a promise that every mark can be removed; paint depth and defect severity set limits.

  • Correction improves suitable surface defects, not dents or failed repairs.
  • Some deeper marks should be retained rather than chased unsafely.
  • The finish should be inspected under controlled lighting.
02

Inspection before polishing or film

A proper assessment checks paint type, previous repairs, chips, sanding marks, edge condition and contamination. New cars can still carry transport marks or dealer-applied defects. Repaired or repainted areas may behave differently from factory paint and need particular care. Photographing condition before work supports a clear scope and avoids presenting existing marks as an installation issue.

  • Identify unstable, peeling or poorly bonded areas first.
  • Discuss paint-depth and safe-correction limits.
  • Confirm which panels will be corrected and which will remain as found.
03

Preparing the corrected surface

After correction, the panel must be cleaned and prepared for the selected film system. Residue, oils and contamination can affect adhesion and visual clarity. Edges, badges, trims and recesses should be discussed before the film is cut and installed. Sydney dust, road grime and workshop handling make controlled preparation and inspection lighting important, especially on dark or highly reflective finishes.

  • Use compatible preparation products, not improvised chemistry.
  • Review alignment, edges and trapped contamination before collection.
  • Allow the film’s recommended early-care period.
04

What owners should expect

The combined service protects a finish that is already in the best condition reasonably available; it does not create a new paint job. Ask whether a mark is being reduced, retained or covered by a planned design choice. Turnaround depends on correction level, coverage, panel complexity and curing. A written scope and aftercare plan are more useful than a promise of perfection, particularly where previous repairs limit the result.

FAQ

Related questions

Can PPF go over paint-corrected panels?

Yes, provided the paint is stable and suitably prepared. Safe correction can improve what is visible beneath clear film, but deep defects and unstable repairs need separate planning.

Should correction happen before PPF?

Usually, suitable correction is planned before installation because defects are harder to address beneath film. The sequence should be confirmed after inspecting paint and repairs.

Will PPF hide scratches?

It may visually soften some light marks, but PPF is not a repair. Deep scratches, dents and unstable paint should be assessed and resolved or documented first.
